I want people to know that I actually like Tiger Woods. At least I think he's got a pretty cool personality. I just don't like the idea of General Motors or anyone using Buick's name profit off if because it's my impression the David obviously got the short end of the stick.

Brilliant inventor who fell into obscurity.

He was born in Arbroath, Scotland in 1856 and move to the US, when he was 2 years old with his family. His dad died three years later and his mother raised him by working in a Detroit candy store. At an early age he showed that he was quite mechanical inclined. At age 15 David Dunbar Buick was already working for the Alexander Manufacturing Company. It was a company in Detroit that manufactured plumbing fixtures. Apparently he was the one who figured out how to bond enamel to cast iron. He revolutionized the lawn sprinklers and bathroom fixtures we have grown so accustomed to.

Buick and his buddy from school took over the business and turned it into a highly successful operation. However, the money didn�t make him as happy as making things and when the combustion engines began running around he felt the need to get in on it. Buick came up with the idea of putting valves in the cylinder heads of engines.

Buick got mixed up with William Durant, who I've read about in the book on the Fords. Durant got Buick involved with General Motors. Though Buick came up with a unique carburetor design, he found nothing but road blocks when he tried to get a patent for it. I'll bet it was because someone like Durant paid off some politician and I get the impression that General Motors took him to the cleaners. His life consisted of one bad business deal after another. Buick died at the age 74 while working a meaningless remedial desk job that didn't pay enough for him to even afford a telephone.
